Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) encouraged constituents to cast a protest vote in Michigan’s primary to challenge how the Biden administration has backed Israel during its fight against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
In a video posted to social media on Saturday, Tlaib advocated for creating a voting block to oppose the conflict that ramped up after Hamas conducted terrorist attacks on Israeli soil in October, killing an estimated 1,200 people.
“We don’t want a country that supports wars and bombs and destruction. We want to support life. We want to stand up for every single life killed in Gaza,” Tlaib said.
“This is the way you can raise our voices, to make us even more visible,” she added later. “Right now, we feel completely neglected and just unseen by our government. If you want us to be louder, then come here and vote uncommitted.”

Tlaib is a member of the leftist “Squad” and is the sole Palestinian American member of Congress. She has voted against a number of resolutions geared toward expressing support for Israel and last year was censured for her response to the deadly terrorist attacks by Hamas.
The video Tlaib appeared in came from a group called Listen to Michigan, which is urging voters to send President Joe Biden a “clear message” in the Democratic Party’s primary on February 27 by filling out the “Uncommitted” bubble on the ballot.
“He’s not representing the young people who put him in office and turned out in the midterms — and are now out protesting his policies in the streets,” the group said on its website, objecting to Biden’s support of Israel.
The Biden administration has spoken out in favor of Israel defending itself against Hamas, sought more aid for the country, and pushed for the freedom of roughly 100 hostages who are still believed to be in the group’s captivity.
But Biden is now urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to go through with a ground invasion of Gaza’s southern city of Rafah, where it is estimated that more than half the strip’s 2.3 million population have gathered during the conflict.

“I’ve made the case — and I feel very strongly about it — that there has to be a — a temporary ceasefire to get the prisoners out, to get the hostages out. And that is underway. I’m still hopeful that that can be done,” Biden said on Friday.
“And in the meantime, I don’t anticipate — I’m hoping that you — that the Israelis will not make any massive land invasion in the meantime,” he added.
