Olivia Munn revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 and said she made the decision to undergo a double mastectomy to stop the “fast moving” disease.
In a lengthy post to Instagram on Wednesday, the 43-year-old actress detailed how she went from testing negative for a genetic test for “90 different cancer genes” to being diagnosed with breast cancer just two months later.
“In the past ten months, I have had four surgeries, so many days spent in bed I can’t even count …surprisingly, I’ve only cried twice,” Munn wrote. “I guess I haven’t felt like there was time to cry.”
“I’ve tended to let people see me when I have energy, when I can get dressed and get out of the house, when I can take my baby boy to the park,” Munn continued. “I’ve kept the diagnosis and the worry and the recovery and the pain medicine and the paper gowns private. I needed to catch my breath and get through some of the hardest parts before sharing.”
‘The Newsroom’ star said her doctor decided to calculate her “Breast Cancer Risk Assessment” score, something that she said saved her life. That resulted in her getting an MRI, which led to an ultrasound, followed by a biopsy.
“The biopsy showed I had a Luminal B cancer in both breasts,” she wrote, adding that it was an “aggressive, fast moving cancer.”

Munn said she had a double mastectomy and feels so “lucky” they “caught it with enough time that I had options.”
“I’m so thankful to my friends and family for loving me through this,” she added.
She also encouraged women to ask their “doctor to calculate your Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score.”
Munn and comedian John Mulaney have been together since 2021. The couple welcomed son Malcolm into the world in November that year.
