Cartel Bosses Busted—Finally!

Medallion possessed by CDN members

Hold onto your hats, folks! On May 21, 2025, the U.S. Treasury dropped a bombshell, slapping sanctions on two big shots from the Cartel del Noreste (CDN). This gang, a real pain in the neck, got tagged as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. Conservatives are doing a happy dance, seeing this as a big win against bad guys sneaking across our borders. CDN’s been up to no good, dealing drugs and smuggling guns.

Big Names Targeted

Northeast Cartel leader Juan Gerardo Treviño Chávez, alias: “El Huevo”

Now, let’s talk names. The Treasury went after Juan Gerardo Treviño Chávez, aka “El Huevo,” and Juan Carlos Ramirez-Abadia. These guys are not your average Joes; they’re the muscle behind CDN’s nasty work. Remember that 2022 attack on our consulate in Nuevo Laredo? That’s them. El Huevo got nabbed in 2022, but these sanctions freeze their cash, really sticking it to them. This shows we’re serious about keeping America safe.

Juan Carlos Ramirez-Abadia, aliases: “Chupeta,” “Cien,” “Don Augusto,” “El Patron,” “Gustavo Ortiz,” “Charlie Pareja”

Treasury’s Big Stick

Here’s the kicker: these Cartel del Noreste sanctions are part of a bigger plan by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). Think of OFAC as the Treasury’s tough guy, going after terrorists and crooks with money moves. De Anda, for instance, was buying guns here in the U.S. to arm CDN. Crazy, right? CDN split from Los Zetas, making things tricky, but the Treasury’s not backing down. They want to break this cartel apart. Learn about OFAC’s powers at Treasury.gov.

Firearms acquired by affiliates of CDN smuggled from the US into Mexico

Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent made a statement about the cartel arrests:

“In working toward the total elimination of cartels to Make America Safe Again, the Trump Administration will hold these terrorists accountable for their criminal activities and abhorrent acts of violence… CDN and its leaders have carried out a violent campaign of intimidation, kidnapping, and terrorism, threatening communities on both sides of our southern border. We will continue to cut off the cartels’ ability to obtain the drugs, money and guns that enable their violent activities.”

What’s Next?

So, the Cartel del Noreste sanctions are a step in the right direction, but conservatives want more. Why just two when CDN’s got a whole network? Will we see more of these sanctions? Can the Treasury keep up the pressure? Think about it.
