Dramatic police dash cam video shows suspect firing into crowd and officers returning fire

Myrtle Beach Shooting Leaves 11 Injured, Teen Dead

A shooting rocked Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on April 26, 2025, when 18-year-old Jerrius Davis fired into a crowd on North Ocean Boulevard, injuring 11 people. Officer Brandon O’Rourke responded in just 1.2 seconds, killing Davis. This violent outburst, part of a rising crime wave, has left the community reeling and demanding answers. Why did this happen, and what’s fueling the violence in this tourist hotspot?

The incident, recorded on police dashcam, shows the suspect firing into a crowd and the police returning fire in 1.2 seconds

What Happened That Night?

On a busy Saturday night, Jerrius Davis, an 18-year-old from Bennettsville, pulled a gun from his backpack and fired four shots into a crowd near 9th Avenue North. The attack injured 11 people, including kids as young as 13. Officer O’Rourke, a seasoned cop, fired five shots, stopping Davis but leaving questions about the chaos. The Myrtle Beach Police Department says tensions from a prior football game and earlier fights sparked the violence.

Doubts and Demands for Truth

Civil rights advocate John Barnett, representing victims, questions the police account, calling the released dashcam footage unclear and demanding body-cam videos. He is demanding punitive action be taken against Officer O’Rourke and the police department. Ironically, while Barnett suspects police misconduct, African American communities bear the brunt of Myrtle Beach’s violent crime wave. Families, like that of Jerrius Davis, grieve and seek clarity, but the focus remains on the 11 injured and a shaken city.

Rising Crime in Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach, a sunny tourist destination, is grappling with a dark surge in violent crime. This shooting follows a string of incidents, including a May 25, 2025, shooting in Little River that wounded 10. The April shooting exposes a city that is battling rising crime while police face scrutiny for their rapid response. Officer O’Rourke’s quick action stopped a potential massacre, yet 11 people were hurt, and a teen is dead. As investigations continue, the community wonders: How can Myrtle Beach reclaim its safety and prevent more bloodshed?
