Imagine handing over your beloved family pet to a supposed animal rescuer, paying hundreds for a better life—only to learn it starved amid rotting corpses. This nightmare unfolded in the English county, Essex, where Oaveed Rahman turned a fake charity into a house of horrors. Rahman, the man behind this outrage, now sits in prison. Yet the pain lingers for victims and animal lovers everywhere.
Rahman’s Cruel Scam Unravels
Rahman, 26, from Crays Hill near Billericay, ran Save A Paw as a phony animal rehoming center. He tricked owners into surrendering their dogs—sometimes a cat too—and charged fees around £250 each for fake rehoming or rehab. In total, he pocketed about £4,800 from 11 victims. However, he never provided care. Instead, pets were tortured and killed.

Starvation and Filth Revealed
Police raided his property in May 2025. They discovered 41 dead dogs in various states of decay—some in bins, others scattered around sheds and gardens. The stench hit from 40 meters away. Meanwhile, 21 live dogs and one cat endured squalid conditions without enough food or water. Many animals were so ill that vets later euthanized them. A veteran Essex Police officer called it the worst animal cruelty he had seen in 30 years.

Rahman Faces Justice
Rahman pleaded guilty to 11 counts of fraud by false representation. He also admitted causing unnecessary suffering to 21 dogs and one cat. In addition, he owned a banned XL Bully breed dog. At Basildon Crown Court on February 20, 2026, Judge Richard Conley described the acts as prolonged barbaric mistreatment and betrayal. Therefore, Rahman received five years in prison. He got a lifetime ban from owning any animals.

Outrage Over Light Sentence
Victims wept in court as details emerged. The judge highlighted how Rahman’s fraud devastated lives. Still, many feel five years falls short for such evil—41 innocent dogs dead from neglect and starvation. This shocking case reminds us how predators exploit trust in animal lovers. It exposed a shocking betrayal of pets and owners alike. A fake rescue operation led to massive suffering and death, ending in prison time and a lifelong animal ban. How can society better protect vulnerable animals from such heartless scams—before more lives are lost?
